The idea

After the dense,
a stretch of open space.

A farewell painting led us to look again at the change from round beads to braided cord in this piece.

The painting is a reference we adopted after the design: a way of looking, not where the piece began.

A handscroll detail: open water with a small boat and figures, meeting trees and rocks on the right

01 · A way of looking

A parting,
kept in a painting.

Shen Zhou painted Farewell at a Spring River in 1499. A boat and figures on the bank are taking leave of one another; the museum places it among farewell paintings, which keep a parting in a picture to mark a friendship.

We looked at something narrower: its density and openness. On the right, trees and rocks are dense; moving left, the water is drawn with fewer and fewer strokes, and the boat and figures leave that openness alone.

02 · Dense and open, side by side

The same change,
in beads and cord.

The brown and ivory beads make a denser run. At the two pale green beads they stop, and twin braided cords carry the outline on, with space still showing between them.

We chose to keep that difference: the beads have weight; the cord is lighter and more open. The knot at the centre stays, as a pause among the lines.

03 · Back to the whole piece

Full beads,
light lines.

The brown, ivory and pale green beads hold the eye; the braided cord lets the outline open out. Two kinds of weight in one piece is what we wanted to keep.

The painting offered one way of looking at it. You might simply like the colours, and the way bead and cord sit side by side.

Brown and ivory beads form one arc. At its two ends, pale green beads mark where the beaded path becomes cord; the two ends face one another without touching.

We read this as two people sharing a life and a rhythm, while each person’s feelings and choices remain their own. The cords still meet at the knot: the space belongs to the connection.

Along one curve, the beads keep their own grain, colour and light. Being together need not erase either person’s outline.
